The Freelance Leap

I am so excited as today has been my first time working as a full time freelancer. If you follow me on you may known that this has been prompted by the very exciting chance to produce this year's National Student Drama Festival (NSDF)!

I am so thrilled to be taking on this challenge as NSDF was the place that really began my career. I attended the festival as a member of the company in 2020 (yes that year) and ti was the first time I had ever been able to talk to industry professionals outside of an academic setting. I could meet people who had roles like producer, stage manager and ask them exactly how they go there and what advice they could give someone like me. It's where I decided to look into producing professionally and where I made connections that I still have and cherish today so I am beyond proud to be able to go back and ensure that more emerging artists have a space for their voice to be heard and ambition championed.

BUT it was also a really scary decision. As we all know everything is getting more expensive so this is possibly the worst time to lose a stable income but I also knew that I had to do it partially because of this fear. I've been really lucky to work full time jobs since 2021 and then part time ones all through out uni but I've always wanted to try freelancing as I love working on multiple different projects, meeting and working with new people and I'm even that odd person who enjoys writing applications but I'd always been scared of it not working out. Of not getting work. Of failing. But when I had the offer from NSDF I knew that I couldn't let this fear control how my career and my future would look like. I knew that not taking it because of what ifs would only lead to regrets down the line.

So on this very exciting day my advice to you is - If it scares you it's probably what you should be doing.

And on another note if you happen to need a producer/writer/dramaturg or script reader this year please do let me know, I'd love to chat!
